1. About this policy
SHANKISH PTY LTD operates Shankish (“Shankish”, “we”, “us” or “our”). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store and disclose personal information through our application, website and related services, and how users can exercise their privacy choices or make a complaint.
Personal information means information or an opinion about an identified individual, or an individual who is reasonably identifiable.
We comply with applicable Australian privacy law, including the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles to the extent they apply to us.
For privacy enquiries, contact support@shankish.com.au.
2. Information we collect
Depending on the features used, we collect:
- Account and profile information, such as a name, email address, phone number, profile photo and authentication information.
- Listing information, including photos, descriptions, prices, condition and listing location.
- Messages, offers, reports and support correspondence.
- Preferences, including search or alert criteria and notification settings.
- Subscription status, purchase identifiers and transaction information provided by the relevant app store.
- Technical information needed to operate the service, such as IP address, device and operating system information, notification identifiers and diagnostic records.
Location information may include a suburb or location entered by the user and device location information where permission is granted.
If a third-party sign-in service is used, we receive the information that service shares under the user’s permissions.
Users should avoid including unnecessary sensitive information in listings, photos or messages. We do not ask users to publish identity documents, payment-card details or their home address in a listing.
3. How we collect information
We collect information when users register, edit a profile, list an item, send messages or offers, set alerts, subscribe or contact us.
Supporting services may automatically collect technical information when users access the app or website.
We may also receive information from authentication and subscription providers, and from users reporting an interaction involving another account.
4. How we use information
We use information to:
- Create and manage accounts and listings.
- Enable buying, selling, swapping and donating.
- Display nearby listings.
- Deliver messages, offers and requested notifications.
- Provide Smart Alerts and AI Smart Pricing.
- Manage Premium access.
- Provide support and respond to enquiries.
- Investigate reports, prevent fraud and protect users.
- Maintain security, diagnose problems and improve our services.
- Meet applicable legal obligations.
Access to messages for support or moderation is limited to purposes connected with operating and protecting the service.
Where permitted by law, we may send marketing communications. Users can unsubscribe through the communication or contact us. Essential service and security messages may still be sent.
5. Information visible to other users
Listing content and relevant profile information are visible to other users as displayed in the app. This may include a displayed name, profile photo, listing photos, description, price and approximate listing location or distance.
Messages and offers are shared with the participants in the interaction.
An exact pickup address or other personal information voluntarily shared in a message will be visible to its recipient. Other users may retain information shared with them, including screenshots, after a listing is removed or an account is closed.
6. Location and device permissions
Location information supports nearby listings, search and relevant alerts. Users can manage location permissions through their device settings. Refusing permission may limit related features; any manual location option available in the app can be used instead.
The location displayed publicly is separate from device location used internally. Users should review a listing’s location before publishing and avoid including an exact home address in public content.
Camera and photo permissions support image uploads. Notification permissions support alerts and service notifications. Users can change these permissions through device settings.
7. AI Smart Pricing and Smart Alerts
AI Smart Pricing processes item information to generate an estimated price.
Smart Alerts process selected criteria and listing information to identify potential matches.
These features may involve supporting service providers. The information shared with external providers, the purposes of that sharing and relevant handling arrangements must be accurately described in the published policy.
8. Subscriptions and payments
Apple or Google processes Premium purchases through the applicable app store. Shankish receives information needed to verify purchases, manage subscription access and provide support.
Payment-card information submitted directly to those stores is handled under their privacy policies.
Shankish does not process payments between users for marketplace items. Information provided to another user or a separate payment service is handled by that recipient under its applicable arrangements.
9. Service providers and other disclosures
We disclose information to service providers and authorised personnel where reasonably necessary to operate Shankish. Relevant functions may include hosting and storage, sign-in, email, notifications, diagnostics, subscription verification and AI processing.
Authorised contractors may access information for maintenance, support or moderation.
We may also disclose information where required or authorised by law, in response to lawful requests, to investigate suspected unlawful activity, to protect rights and safety, or in connection with a business sale or restructuring subject to appropriate confidentiality safeguards.
We take reasonable steps to protect information shared with providers and limit access to the purposes for which it is needed.
Providing information to Shankish does not constitute blanket consent to unrelated uses or disclosures.
10. Storage and overseas handling
Information may be stored using our hosting and service providers. Providers or authorised support personnel may process or access information outside Australia.
The published policy must identify likely overseas recipient countries where practicable and accurately reflect the actual hosting, processing and support arrangements.
11. Security and retention
We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect personal information against misuse, interference, loss and unauthorised access, modification or disclosure. No system is completely secure.
Users should protect their account credentials and notify us of suspected unauthorised access
We retain information while needed to provide our services and for legitimate legal, security, fraud-prevention and dispute-resolution purposes. When information is no longer needed, we take reasonable steps to delete or de-identify it.
Retention and backup arrangements must reflect the actual systems used by Shankish.
12. Account deletion and privacy choices
Users can request deletion of their account and associated information through the account deletion options provided by Shankish or by contacting support@shankish.com.au.
We may verify identity before acting on a request. Where information must be retained, we will explain the reason and relevant retention period or criteria.
Uninstalling the app does not delete an account or previously stored information. App-store subscriptions should be cancelled separately through Apple or Google.
Copies already shared with other users may remain with those users. Backup copies are removed in accordance with the applicable backup retention cycle.
Users can update available profile information, manage permissions and notifications, unsubscribe from marketing, and contact us to request access to or correction of their personal information.
If we cannot fulfil a request, we will explain why where permitted by law. Any applicable access charge will be disclosed in advance and must comply with the law. There is no charge for making an access request or requesting correction.
13. Younger users
Shankish requires users to be at least 16 years old. Users under 18 require parental or guardian permission and supervision.
If someone believes an account belongs to a person below the permitted age, they should contact support@shankish.com.au so we can investigate and take appropriate action.
14. Website technologies and external services
Where the website or app uses cookies, analytics or similar technologies, the published policy will explain their purposes and available controls.
Links to external services do not make their data handling part of Shankish’s practices. Users should review the relevant provider’s privacy information before sharing information with it.
15. Enquiries and complaints
For privacy enquiries, access, correction or deletion requests, or complaints, contact support@shankish.com.au.
Please provide enough information to explain the concern without sending unnecessary sensitive information.
We aim to respond to complaints within 30 days and will advise if more time is needed.
If dissatisfied with our response, users may contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at https://www.oaic.gov.au where the matter falls within its jurisdiction. This does not prevent users from using another available complaint mechanism.
16. Changes to this policy
We will publish updates on our website and in the app with an updated date.
We will notify users of material changes where appropriate or required and obtain consent where required before introducing a new use of information.
Changes do not retrospectively authorise unlawful handling of personal information.
